Kathmandu – A 19-year-old Nepali youth, Sakriya Pandey, developed a cost-effective, portable air pollution monitoring device. His startup, Vayudrishti, created this device, offering a solution significantly cheaper than existing $41,000 models, costing only around $250.

The Vayudrishti device, small enough to fit in your palm, uses a copyrighted algorithm. It merges satellite and ground data to provide pollution insights for a 10 sq km area, surpassing current devices limited to 1 sq km.

Beyond air quality, it forecasts rain, wind direction, and speed, with predictions for up to a week. The device also alerts about potential forest fires.

Vayudrishti's website offers free live air quality data for all seven provinces of Nepal, and cities in India and Pakistan. It also educates users on health impacts and preventive measures based on pollution levels.

The system is US EPA approved, a critical validation as Nepal lacked a clear certification framework. Vayudrishti also developed an AI system to analyze lung X-rays for pollution-related damage and runs "Vayu Sena" awareness programs in schools.
